Giving your Camera 20/20 Vision with ColorEyes
By David Cardinal
This article provides test results for a product called ColorEyes 20/20, which is designed to profile the color accuracy of digital cameras and then produce a custom ICC color profile unique to each camera profiled.  The ICC profile is then used in a color managed workflow to help ensure colors are displayed and reproduced accurately.  Breeze Systems' Downloader Pro will read the camera's serial number (or other unique number) and apply color profiles to each image automatically as it is downloaded.  We've used the ColorEyes system for two years and the results are very good.  The profiling process can be a little time consuming, but cameras only need to be profiled once unless they are sent in for repairs or have their firmware upgraded.
Evidence Technology magazine has published a two-part article written by Erik Berg on building a digital photography workflow.  Authentegrity™ for Downloader Pro and Breeze Systems' are highlighted in the article, but there is a wealth of information about the kinds of questions that need to be answered when setting up a digital workflow in a law enforcement enviroment.

This is a great site for information on color management and ICC profiling.  Andrew Rodney, aka the Digital Dog, is the owner of the site, and is an Adobe Certified Expert.  He has written numerous articles, and a book called Color Management for Photographers.
A monthly column by Mike Chaney
Mike Chaney writes a monthly article on subjects such as color management, printers, RAW image files and other technical aspects of digital photography.  This is a good source for in-depth and up-to-date information on subjects related to digital photography.  Steve's DigiCams is also one of the "must visit" sites for camera test reports.  Click the Steve's logo above to visit their home page.
This is another "must visit" site for one-stop comparisons of digital cameras.  It is also one of the first places to look for the latest news and announcements about the industry and its manufacturers.  Click the logo above to go to the Imaging Resource site.
This is great site for articles on both the technical and everday aspects of digital photography.  They offer three regular columns, as well as an "Understanding Series" and Tututorials on hardware and technique.  The articles on Understanding Exposure and Understanding Histograms are must reads for those new to digital cameras.

The current debate among those who use and those who don't use RAW camera file formats is remarkably similar to the debates once seen between those who embraced Ansel Adams and his Zone System and those who didn't.  Obviously there is room within the photographic community for all sides in this debate, but if you'd like to learn more about the pros and cons of using RAW file formats, read Understanding RAW Files by Michael Reichmann.
