Authentegrity™ for Downloader Pro is an image integrity plug-in designed to work in conjunction with Breeze Systems' Downloader Pro to document the chain of custody and prove the integrity of evidentiary images recorded with a digital camera. The plug-in is available to law enforcement and non-commercial users as freeware (see the License Agreement for more information about who qualifies for a free license). Commercial users may license Authentegrity DLPro for a nominal fee.
Authentegrity for Downloader Pro was designed by Erik Berg, a law enforcement professional with more than twenty years experience, and veteran software engineers Carl Ransdell and Matt Brown, to meet the unique needs of law enforcement and other professional users of digital cameras who must introduce their images into legal proceedings. Erik has been designing software solutions for forensic imaging applications since 1994. He has appeared on the Cable News Network, The Discovery Channel and 60 Minutes as a result of his successes in digitally enhancing latent fingerprints recovered from homicide crime scenes, and for his work on the development of software tools for the Forensic Community. Carl Ransdell and Matt Brown have been writing sophisticated and reliable software for the engineering, architectural and law enforcement fields for nearly 20 years. After working together on a number of commercial software projects for other clients, Erik, Carl and Matt decided to create a highly capable image integrity solution that is simple to use, does what needs to be done, utilizing open standards, and for a price anyone with a need to prove the integrity of a digital image can afford.
Authentegrity for Downloader Pro generates a digitally signed text file that contains a wealth of documentary information, including the IP address for the computer used to download an image from a camera's memory card, the user name of the person logged into Windows when the image is downloaded, the date and time the image is downloaded, and two different secure hash values (SHA 256, SHA 512) for each image file downloaded. Secure hashing is based upon some very complex mathematical formulas which are used to produce a unique number (or hash) based upon the contents of an image file. The number produced is so unique in fact that it is mathematically infeasible for two different image files to produce the same hash value. Change one pixel in the image and the resulting hash value will be completely different from what it was prior to the change.
